President Trump signed an executive order Thursday aimed at easing an IRS rule limiting political activity for religious organizations — a move that was blasted by critics on the left and the right. At his signing ceremony in the White House’s Rose Garden, Trump said the order “will not allow people of faith to be bullied, targeted, or silenced any more.” He vowed to defend all faiths, saying the order showed the United States “will never stand for religious discrimination.” The order also aims to allow employers to deny covering contraception for employers if that clashes with the religious beliefs of the bosses. The ACLU immediately threatened to sue based on Trump’s remarks that the order would “destroy” the Johnson Amendment, which prohibits tax-exempt religious organizations from getting involved in political campaigns. The civil rights group backed off after reading the text of the order, finding it … [Read more...] about President Trump signs executive order to ease limits on political activity for religious groups

President Trump signed an executive order Monday morning requiring the elimination of two federal regulations for every new one created. Trump described it as be "the biggest such act that our country has ever seen" shortly before signing it in the Oval Office. "If you have a regulation you want, number one, we’re not gonna approve it because it’s already been approved probably in 17 different forms,” Trump said. “But if we do, the only way you have a chance is we have to knock out two regulations for every new regulation. So if there’s a new regulation, they have to knock out two.” The signing of the executive order requires federal agencies to eliminate two existing regulations for every new regulation they propose. Trump said the executive order will also eliminate some government regulations already in place. “Unless prohibited by law, whenever an executive department or agency (agency) publicly … [Read more...] about President Trump signs executive order targeting government regulations
WASHINGTON — President Trump signed a trio of executive orders he said are aimed at cracking down on crime, though none of them appear as though they'll have an immediate impact on law enforcement. "I'm signing three executive actions today designed to restore safety in America," Trump announced from the Oval Office as he swore in Attorney General Jeff Sessions, saying the first would "Break the back of the criminal cartels that have spread across our nation and are destroying the blood of our youth." The others create a task force on reducing violent crime and instruct Sessions to implement a plan to stop crime against law enforcement officers. "A new era of justice begins and it begins right now," Trump said. The White House, as has become habit, didn't put out the text of the orders until hours after he signed them — two hours in this case. The orders themselves are short in length and on specifics, though it appears all three are fairly … [Read more...] about Trump signs executive orders he says will crack down on cartels, violence toward cops
WASHINGTON - President Trump on Friday signed an executive order temporarily suspending immigration from countries with terrorism concerns, blocking all refugees from entering the United States for 120 days and stopping Syrian refugees from coming into the country indefinitely. The signing made good on one of his most controversial campaign promises — and was decried by his critics as un-American. "I'm establishing new vetting measures to keep radical Islamic terrorists out of the United States of America. We don't want them here," Trump said in a signing ceremony at the Pentagon. "We only want to admit those into our country who will support our country and love deeply our people." The White House didn’t make public the order — entitled Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry Into the United States — until hours after its signing. “Tears are running down the cheeks of the Statue of Liberty tonight as a grand tradition … [Read more...] about President Trump signs executive order that temporarily bars entry of refugees into U.S.
President Trump has signed an executive order to officially declare his inauguration a national day of patriotism, according to a document published in the Federal Register. Paperwork filed on Monday with the federal government declares Jan. 20, 2017 — Trump’s Inauguration Day — as “National Day of Patriotic Devotion.” Trump’s reason for his proclamation is “to strengthen our bonds to each other and to our country — and to renew the duties of Government to the people.” Press Secretary Sean Spicer first hinted at the move in a tweet on Inauguration Day. He later went to say that naming Inauguration Day would be among Trump’s list of executive orders during his first days in office. Spicer had made that announcement before he slammed the press for accurately reporting about President Trump’s inauguration crowd size in his first White House briefing on Saturday. … [Read more...] about President Trump signs executive order declaring his Inauguration Day as a national day of patriotism
President Trump signed an executive order to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border and will sign another banning some Muslim immigrants from entering the country — setting off a wave of protests in New York and elsewhere. Trump’s order Wednesday paving the way for construction of the wall is the first in a series of steps he says will stem illegal immigration and strengthen national security. In the coming days, Trump is also expected to sign orders indefinitely barring Syrian refugees from settling in the U.S. and imposing a temporary halt on all refugees from around the world. “A nation without borders is not a nation,” Trump said in a visit to the Department of Homeland Security. “Beginning today, the United States of America gets back control of its borders.” In an interview with ABC News, Trump said construction on the wall would start within months, and that Mexico would reimburse the U.S. “100%” of the … [Read more...] about Trump signs executive order to build Mexico border wall, will seek ban on Muslim immigrants entering U.S.
WASHINGTON — Working to dismantle his predecessor's environmental legacy, President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday aimed at expanding drilling in the Arctic and opening other federal areas to oil and gas exploration. With one day left to rack up accomplishments before he reaches his 100th day in office, Trump signed an order reversing some of former President Barack Obama's restrictions and instructing Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke to review a plan that dictates which federal locations are open to offshore drilling. It's part of Trump's promise to unleash the nation's energy reserves in an effort to reduce reliance on foreign oil and to spur jobs, regardless of fierce opposition from environmental activists who say offshore drilling harms whales, walruses and other wildlife and exacerbates global warming. "This executive order starts the process of opening offshore areas to job-creating energy exploration," Trump said during a White House … [Read more...] about Trump signs executive order to make Arctic oil drilling easier

WASHINGTON — President Trump's newest executive orders target a water-protection rule and elevate an initiative on historically black colleges and universities into the White House.Trump signed the executive orders in back-to-back signing ceremonies at the White House on Tuesday. The first seeks to undo the Waters of the United States Rule, an Obama administration regulation that sought to reinterpret the Clean Water Act to extend federal protections to smaller rivers and streams. In a Roosevelt Room ceremony with farmers and lawmakers, Trump called the rule "one of the worst examples of federal regulation" and said "it has truly run amok."At issue: the definition of "navigable waters" under the Clean Water Act. Under the 2015 Obama rule, those waters could include, for example, anything within a 100-year floodplain or within 4,000 feet of a high-tide mark. "A few years ago, the EPA decided that 'navigable waters' can mean nearly every puddle or every ditch on a … [Read more...] about Trump signs executive orders on waters rule, black colleges
WASHINGTON — President Trump took a hard line against Canada on Tuesday as he signed an executive order he said would help American farmers compete globally."Our border states in particular are not able to sell their dairy products into Canada, and this has been going on for a while, and we're not going to put up with it," Trump said while meeting with 15 farmers at the White House to sign the executive order. The order itself followed the same pattern of many of Trump's previous orders — convening a task force and asking for a report within 180 days. The order asks for ways the federal government can boost rural development by reducing regulation. But the timing of the order served to cast it in nationalistic terms, coming on the heels of the Commerce Department's 24% punitive tariff on Canadian softwood lumber. "People don’t realize Canada’s been very rough on the United States. Everyone thinks of Canada being wonderful and civil. I love Canada. … [Read more...] about Taking hard line against Canada, Trump signs executive order to boost rural America
